When is the full moon in Istanbul?

A full moon comes every 29.5 days; the rest of 2026 and all of 2027 are in the table below. “Exact time” is the astronomical moment the moon is fullest (Türkiye time, UTC+3). Even when that moment falls in daytime, the moon looks full to the naked eye the night before and the night after; the “best night” column gives the evening to watch. On a full-moon night the moon rises in the east as the sun sets and stays up all night; in Istanbul that means a moon climbing over the Asian side, above the Çamlıca hills. Moonrise is approximated from that evening’s sunset time and can shift by 10 to 20 minutes with the horizon and the hills.

The Bosphorus by full moon

A full-moon night on the Bosphorus is its own thing. The moon comes up over Üsküdar and climbs behind the Maiden’s Tower and the bridges, and its light lies on the water like a long road; in Turkish that glitter has a name, yakamoz. From the shore you see it between buildings, mixed with the lights of the other side; from mid-strait you get the moon, the silhouettes and the path on the water in one frame. The strait is far quieter at night than by day: ferries thin out, engine noise drops, and the palaces and waterside mansions throw their lights onto the water.

For photographs the best window is the first half hour after moonrise, when the moon sits low, large and orange, and shares the frame with the Maiden’s Tower or a bridge. As it climbs it shrinks, but the path of light on the water grows longer.

A private full-moon cruise: how it works

We do not run a separate group tour for the full moon; the scheduled sunset group cruise is on the water as the sun goes down and can catch the first minutes of moonrise, but the night itself is for private charters only. You set the departure time (boarding half an hour before the moonrise in the table works best), the route can be the Bosphorus or the Golden Horn, and the rate is per hour for the whole yacht: from €150, 2-hour minimum. Food, drinks and decoration are quoted separately and only on request; the dinner cruise page has the options. For proposals, anniversaries and birthdays, book the full-moon date early; other guests want the same evening.

Which months are best?

September and October full moons are the most balanced: still warm, mostly clear skies, moonrise around 19:00. Summer full moons (June to August) rise late, after 20:30, but the nights are warm and the cruise can run longer. Winter full moons rise early (17:30 to 18:00) and, on a clear night, are the brightest of the year; our yachts have indoor saloons, so the cold is not a problem. If the weather closes in, the cruise is rescheduled or refunded, on the same terms as any charter.
