Galata Bridge and Eminönü

The yacht leaves the pier and passes beneath the Galata Bridge almost at once, the fish restaurants under the roadway at eye level. Eminönü opens on the left: the ferry piers, the New Mosque and, behind it, the Spice Bazaar. Above the whole waterfront, the Süleymaniye Mosque holds the skyline.

Süleymaniye and Cibali

Past the Atatürk Bridge the shore grows quieter. Süleymaniye stays in view above the rooftops, and at the water’s edge in Cibali the old tobacco factory, now a university campus, marks the start of the historic neighbourhoods. The sound of the city drops a notch.

Fener and Balat

Fener is the seat of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, and the red-brick Phanar Greek Orthodox College sits on the hill above it like a fortress. Balat follows, its coloured houses climbing the slope in rows, and on the waterfront stands the iron Bulgarian St Stephen Church, easiest to appreciate from the water. On the opposite shore, the Rahmi M. Koç industrial museum and the old Haliç shipyards line the bank.

Eyüp and the head of the inlet

Beyond the Haliç Metro Bridge the inlet narrows toward Eyüp. Feshane sits on the shore, and Eyüp Sultan Mosque stands a little inland with the cemetery slopes rising behind it toward the Pierre Loti hill and its cable car. Further in lie Sütlüce and Miniatürk. Timing and light

The inlet runs roughly east–west, so the light changes through the day. In the morning the sun is behind you as you sail inland, and Fener and Balat show their colours clearly. In the late afternoon you sail toward the sun instead; the water picks up the colour of the sky, the domes and minarets of the old city become silhouettes, and on a clear evening the name explains itself.
