The Bosphorus Sunset Guide
In short. Board 60–90 minutes before sunset and a single cruise gives you both golden hour and blue hour.
- When the sun sets: roughly 17:35–17:45 in December and 20:30–20:40 in June. Turkey has stayed on UTC+3 with no daylight saving since 2016, so old tables are often an hour out.
- Golden hour: the last 40–60 minutes before the sun drops. Blue hour: the 20–30 minutes after it.
- Where to look: at golden hour the Asian shore glows while Europe is in silhouette; at blue hour the roles swap and the European side switches its lights on.
- On deck: it is a few degrees cooler on the water and the drop is sharpest right after sunset — bring a layer even in July.
We run sunset cruises on the Bosphorus for a living, so this page is the reference we wish every guest had before booking: when the sun actually sets in Istanbul month by month, where the light goes, and how to time a cruise so you get both golden hour and blue hour in one evening.

Sunset Times in Istanbul, Month by Month
Istanbul stays on UTC+3 all year (Turkey abolished daylight saving in 2016), so sunset swings widely between seasons. Approximate windows — the exact minute shifts day by day, and we schedule every cruise to the actual sunset:
| Month | Sunset (approx.) |
| January | 17:45 → 18:20 |
| February | 18:20 → 18:55 |
| March | 18:55 → 19:25 |
| April | 19:30 → 20:00 |
| May | 20:00 → 20:30 |
| June | 20:30 → 20:40 |
| July | 20:40 → 20:20 |
| August | 20:20 → 19:40 |
| September | 19:40 → 18:50 |
| October | 18:50 → 18:00 |
| November | 18:00 → 17:35 |
| December | 17:35 → 17:45 |
How to Time Your Cruise
Board 60–90 minutes before sunset. Golden hour — the warm, low light photographers chase — is roughly the last 40–60 minutes before the sun drops; blue hour follows for another 20–30 minutes as the city lights come on. A 2-hour cruise boarding an hour before sunset catches all of it.

Where the Light Goes
On the Bosphorus the sun sets behind the European hills. That has a practical meaning on deck: at golden hour it is the Asian shore that glows — Beylerbeyi, Kuleli, Çengelköy catch the last warm light while the European side turns to silhouette. Then the roles swap: at blue hour the European shore switches its lights on and becomes the show.
Five Photographs Worth Planning For
- Ortaköy Mosque with the bridge behind it — right on the classic route of every cruise, best in the last half hour of gold.
- Dolmabahçe Palace façade — low warm light straight onto the marble, shot from the water in a way no land viewpoint can match.
- The Asian shore glowing — a long shot across the strait while Europe is already in silhouette.
- The old city skyline — domes and minarets against the orange sky, looking south down the strait.
- Blue hour at the bridge — the 15 July Martyrs Bridge lit up, with the last purple in the sky behind Europe.
Season by Season
Summer gives long evenings and warm decks — and the busiest waters of the year. Autumn often has the clearest, cleanest light and calm seas. Winter sunsets are early and frequently the most dramatic, with cloudscapes summer never produces. Spring splits the difference, with green hills along the strait as a bonus.
Practical Notes
- It is a few degrees cooler on the water than in the city, and the drop is sharpest right after sunset — bring a layer even in July.
- Flat shoes make decks easier; phones shoot golden hour surprisingly well, but a lens hood or shaded angle helps against flare.
- Exact boarding time is confirmed with your booking, tuned to that day’s sunset.
Ways to Be On the Water at Sunset
The whole yacht to yourselves: private sunset cruise from €150/hour. The per-person option: Sunset Group Tour at €34, daily from Karaköy. Unsure which: compare the tours.
Landmark by landmark, what you actually pass on the water is covered in our Bosphorus landmark guides.
One more option worth knowing: the group tour follows the day’s sunset schedule for you, but if you want the timing — and the whole deck — to yourselves, you can rent a private yacht in Istanbul by the hour and set the departure to the minute.
Season matters as much as the hour. If your date falls in September or October, our autumn guide covers how the earlier sunset lets you fold the golden hour and dinner into a single charter.
One thing worth planning around: the bridges do not light up at sunset but after dusk, roughly forty minutes later. Our guide to the three Bosphorus bridges explains the timing and which ones a cruise actually passes under.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Bosphorus at Sunset
When is golden hour on the Bosphorus?
The last forty to sixty minutes before the sun drops. Board sixty to ninety minutes before sunset and a single cruise gives you both golden hour and the blue hour that follows it.
Which side of the Bosphorus looks better at sunset?
They swap. At golden hour the Asian shore glows while the European side is in silhouette; at blue hour the roles reverse as Europe switches its lights on. That is the argument for being on the water rather than on either bank.
Is it colder on the water?
Yes, by a few degrees, and the sharpest drop comes right after sunset. Bring a light layer for the deck even on a warm afternoon — it is the thing guests most often wish they had. Season-by-season notes on shoes, layers and what to pack are in our what to wear guide.
What time do I need to book for?
That depends entirely on your date, because sunset in Istanbul moves by almost three hours across the year. Check the exact time for your date in our month-by-month sunset table before fixing a boarding time.

What is blue hour, and how long does it last?
About half an hour after the sun goes, when the sky turns deep blue and the city switches its lights on one stretch at a time. It is far less talked about than golden hour, but on the Bosphorus it is where the difference shows – the bridges and the palaces are lit by then, and the water holds both the sky and the lights.
Which months have the best sunsets on the Bosphorus?
September to November: clear air, long colour after the sun drops, and calm water. Midsummer sunsets are late – around 20:30 in June – which makes them a good end to a full day rather than an evening on their own. Winter brings the earliest and often the sharpest light, with sunset just before 5:45 PM at the end of December.
