Key takeaways

  • 29 October is Republic Day (Cumhuriyet Bayramı), Turkey’s national day. Istanbul marks the evening with a fireworks, light and drone show over the Bosphorus, centred on the 15 July Martyrs’ Bridge in recent years.
  • Sunset is at about 18:05, so a charter boarding at 17:30–18:00 takes in sunset, the lit bridges and the fireworks in one evening.
  • The whole yacht is yours from €150 per hour, minimum two hours; we recommend three for this night. Dinner and drinks are quoted separately.
  • Groups from 12 to 200 guests. Standard boarding at Karaköy; other piers on request.
  • The city publishes the show time only a few days before; we confirm it with every guest. One date a year, so book early.

Short answer: On 29 October Istanbul celebrates Republic Day, and the evening ends with fireworks over the Bosphorus. A private yacht boarding at Karaköy around 17:30 gives you the sunset, the lit bridges and then the show itself, away from the crowds on the shore. The yacht is yours from €150 per hour, minimum two hours; we suggest three.

What happens on the Bosphorus on 29 October

Cumhuriyet Bayramı marks the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey on 29 October 1923. It is a public holiday, and in Istanbul the celebrations gather along the water. In recent years the centrepiece has been a fireworks, light and drone show at the 15 July Martyrs’ Bridge, the first Bosphorus bridge, between Ortaköy and Beylerbeyi. In 2023, the centenary year, the show ran from 19:50 to 20:15. In earlier years it started around 19:30, launched from the Ortaköy side and filling the water between the bridge and the Maiden’s Tower. Format and timing change every year, and the city publishes the programme only a few days before, so we do not print a start time here. Once the 2026 schedule is out, we send it to every guest with a confirmed charter. For where each bridge sits on the route, see our guide to the Bosphorus bridges.

Why watch from the water

The Ortaköy and Beylerbeyi waterfronts fill up early on a holiday evening. From a yacht you have the same sky with none of the crowd: room to move, a table for dinner, and the bridge framed by open water rather than by the heads in front of you.

The evening also starts well before the first firework. Sunset on 29 October is at about 18:05 (Turkey stays on UTC+3 all year), and the hour after it is when the palaces light up, the bridges switch on and the water turns from gold to deep blue. Our Bosphorus sunset guide explains that timing; on 29 October it runs straight into the show.

One practical point. The authorities set a safety perimeter on the water around the show. Our captain positions the yacht within the permitted area with a clear line of sight to the bridge; we do not promise a specific distance.

How the evening runs on a private yacht

A three-hour charter for 29 October 2026 from Karaköy would run roughly like this. The times are indicative, built around the 2023 pattern; we adjust them with you once this year’s programme is published.

If the show is announced for later than in previous years, we shift the start so the charter still ends after the finale.

What it costs

A private charter starts from €150 per hour with a two-hour minimum, and the whole yacht is yours for the booked hours. For 29 October we recommend three hours: two covers the show, but three means boarding in daylight and watching the sunset without glancing at the clock during the finale. Hourly pricing is on the private yacht charter page; the yacht rental prices guide explains what moves the final figure.

Catering is quoted separately: drinks on board, or a seated dinner served while the bridges are lit; see the private Bosphorus dinner cruise page. Boarding away from Karaköy adds a distance-based surcharge, shown as a separate line in the written quote.

Boarding and getting there

Standard boarding is at Karaköy, where the Golden Horn meets the Bosphorus, a short walk from the T1 tram, the M2 metro at Şişhane and the ferry piers. On a holiday evening the shore roads are busy, so tram, metro or ferry is the surer way to reach us.

For a private charter we can also collect you at Kuruçeşme or Bebek, both close to the bridge; at Beşiktaş or Kabataş; or at Kadıköy on the Asian side, each with a distance-based surcharge quoted in writing. Our boarding points page describes each pier.
