Maiden’s Tower
In short. A small tower on a small islet at the southern gate of the Bosphorus — and it photographs best framed small, inside the skyline.
- What it is: ancient sources put a structure here more than two thousand years ago; today’s silhouette is largely the 18th-century Ottoman rebuild, restored and reopened to visitors in 2023.
- Where: on its own islet off Üsküdar, where the strait opens into the Sea of Marmara.
- On our route: cruises leaving Karaköy pass close to it, the group sunset tour included; longer private charters can route south and circle it.
- Best light: sunset, when it turns into a black cut-out against the orange sky over the old city.
A tiny tower on a tiny islet where the Bosphorus opens into the Sea of Marmara — and somehow one of the most storied buildings in a city that has no shortage of them. Ancient sources put a structure here over two thousand years ago; the silhouette you see today is largely the 18th-century Ottoman rebuild, freshly restored and reopened to visitors in 2023.

The Legends
Pick your story. In the Turkish one, a princess is locked in the tower to cheat a prophecy of death by snakebite — the snake arrives anyway, in a fruit basket. Europeans long called it Leander’s Tower, borrowing the Greek tale of a lover who swam a strait each night. Both legends agree on one thing: this is a building about longing, best contemplated from the water.
From the Deck
The tower stands at the strait’s southern gate, off Üsküdar. Cruises departing Karaköy — including our €34 group tour — pass close to it, and longer private charters can route south to circle it with the old city skyline behind. At sunset it becomes a black cut-out against the orange sky over the peninsula: domes, minarets, and one small stubborn tower on the water.
Photo Tip
Do not zoom in on the tower alone — its power is scale. Frame it small against the skyline and the wide water, especially in the last light. Timing in the Sunset Guide.
Ask us on WhatsApp to include it in a custom charter route.
The tower marks the mouth of the strait, so it is usually the first landmark of the run. Carry on north and the next thing to fill your window is Dolmabahçe Palace.
Official source. The Maiden’s Tower has its own official site at kizkulesi.gov.tr. Visiting hours, the shuttle boat and ticket prices are published there and do change, so check it before you plan around a visit. Our route passes the tower from the water — we do not sell tickets to it and we do not land on it.
The best land view of the tower is from Salacak, on the Asian shore just south of Üsküdar — from there it sits in front of the old city skyline rather than against open water. Our guide to the Asian side of the Bosphorus works north from there, village by village.
Frequently Asked Questions About Maiden’s Tower

How old is Maiden’s Tower?
Ancient sources place a structure on the islet more than two thousand years ago, but the silhouette you see today is largely the eighteenth-century Ottoman rebuild.
Why is it called Maiden’s Tower?
From the Turkish legend of a princess locked in the tower to escape a prophecy of death by snakebite — the snake reaches her anyway, hidden in a basket of fruit. Europeans long called it Leander’s Tower instead, after the Greek story of a lover who swam a strait each night.
Where is the best view of Maiden’s Tower?

Do Bosphorus cruises pass Maiden’s Tower?
Cruises leaving Karaköy pass close to it, including the shared Sunset Group Tour at €34 per person. A longer private charter can route south and circle it with the old city behind.
What is the best light for photographing it?
Sunset, when the tower becomes a black cut-out against the orange sky over the historic peninsula. Check your date in our sunset table before fixing a boarding time.
Where exactly is the tower?
On its own islet off Üsküdar, at the southern gate of the Bosphorus where the strait opens into the Sea of Marmara.
