The Bosphorus is one of the great eating and drinking stretches of any city, and almost all of it faces the water. Which raises the obvious question, and the one we are asked more than any other: can you actually turn up by boat?

Sometimes yes, often no, and the difference is worth understanding before you book a table.

Eating along the Bosphorus, shore by shore

The strait is one of the great eating stretches of the city, and it separates cleanly by neighbourhood. This is the honest version.

European shore, south to north

Ortaköy — casual and busy, right under the first bridge. Baked potatoes and waffles rather than a sit-down dinner, and the square is packed at weekends. Good for an hour, not for an evening.

Arnavutköy — the fish street. A row of restaurants below nineteenth-century wooden houses, mid-to-high prices, and the most reliably good seafood on the lower strait.

Bebek — the smartest stretch on the European side. Cafés along the bay, a few serious restaurants, and the sort of place where the bill reflects the postcode as much as the plate. Beautiful at any hour.

Kuruçeşme — the club and late-dinner strip, most of it built out over the water. This is where the Bosphorus goes at night rather than for lunch.

Yeniköy, Tarabya and İstinye — the upper European shore, marinas and quieter high-end dining, considerably less touristed than anything below the second bridge.

Sarıyer — fish, and the börek the neighbourhood is locally famous for. Less polished, more Istanbul.

Asian shore, south to north

Kuzguncuk and Beylerbeyi — small, residential, and the best of the quiet options. Breakfast rather than dinner territory.

Çengelköy — famous for its tea gardens under the plane trees and for a long, unhurried Turkish breakfast on a Sunday.

Kanlıca — one thing, done for centuries: yoghurt, dusted with icing sugar, eaten at the pier. Worth stopping for even if you are not hungry.

Çubuklu and Beykoz — greener and more spread out, with a handful of serious waterfront restaurants among the woods.

Anadolu Kavağı — the fishing village at the top, under Yoros Castle. Fried fish, plastic chairs, and a view down the whole strait. The least refined and, for a lot of people, the best meal of the trip.

Arriving by yacht: what is actually possible

This is the question we get most often and the one most sites answer dishonestly, so here is the real picture.

Some Bosphorus restaurants and clubs have their own jetty or sit beside a public pier we can use. The ones we drop guests at regularly include Lacivert, Sortie, Ruby, Park Fora, Oligark, Uskumru and Chacha Balık — a mix of fish restaurants and the club-restaurants that define a Bosphorus night — and the list is longer than that. Where that is the case, the crew can drop you before dinner and collect you afterwards, so you arrive from the water and leave the same way. It is a small thing that turns out to be what people describe when they get home.

Many do not. A waterfront terrace is not the same as a usable landing, and whether a given venue works depends on the jetty, the weather that evening, and in some cases on the venue agreeing in advance. Anyone who tells you every restaurant on the Bosphorus is reachable by boat has not tried it.

So the practical answer: tell us where you want to eat when you book, and we will confirm before you commit to anything. If it is not workable we will say so and suggest the nearest equivalent that is — and if you would rather we chose, we will put forward two or three that we use regularly.

The same applies to a night out. Dinner ashore and a late pick-up is a common way to run an evening: a sunset cruise first, the crew drops you, and the yacht is waiting when you are done.

How an evening actually runs

The pattern most guests settle on: board before sunset, take the lower strait while the light is good, get dropped at the restaurant, eat without watching the clock, and the yacht is waiting when you come out. Three to four hours of yacht time plus however long dinner takes.

The variation for a night out: a later boarding, the lit shoreline rather than the sunset, and a drop at one of the Kuruçeşme venues instead of a restaurant. The strait after dark is a different place — the palaces and both bridges are lit, and the day traffic is gone.

Can we do dinner and a club on the same night?

Often, if they are on the same stretch of shore. Dinner on the European side and a late drop at one of the Kuruçeşme venues works; a restaurant at the top of the strait and a club in the city does not, because the crossing eats the evening. Tell us both and we will say whether the timing holds.

Is a waterfront restaurant always reachable by boat?

No, and this is the part that catches people out. A terrace over the water is not the same as a usable landing. Some venues have their own jetty, some sit beside a public pier, and plenty have neither. Anyone who tells you every restaurant on the Bosphorus is reachable by boat has not tried it.
